:: nettle picking again ::

This past weekend, we went foraging.

We had noticed the nettle was prime in some places, and for the looks in our calendar, our weekends are filling up.  I really wanted to pick stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), because we are almost out from what we gathered last year, and as it turns out, we use it a lot.

The weather wasn’t really cooperating, but everyone was game, and we headed out.  With rain boots, rain coats and hats.  We needed to get out there that day or I knew we’d miss the chance for our winter stash.

DSC_0160-smallAs soon as we got out of the car it started raining.  Well? It is Portland (Oregon) after all!

Not only did it rain, but it hailed!  And yes, we got soaked.

And we know, we made it just in time.  The stinging nettle looked beautiful.

DSC_0158-smallSome plants had blooms, some were starting to bloom.  We found a shady spot and found a great place to harvest.

DSC_0177-small DSC_0162-smallWe found other beauties too.

Last year we used it a lot.  I’ll share here in few days, what we’ve done with it so far.

  1. I could google nettle, but I’d rather hear from a real person. What is it and what is it used for?

    • Hello Subsistance Suburb. Stinging nettle (I am adding a link) is a plant (“weed”) that grows all over. We like it because it has lots of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C. We dry it (for tea, and also I mix it with foods), and freeze it and make pesto. I’m writing another post next week about what we’ve made with it.
      You can search stinging nettle in my older posts, I wrote last year.
      Thanks for stopping by!

    Marcela! We are on the island at the exact same time as you. We saw that same boat on the river! Wouldn’t it have been fun to run into each other! Let’s get something on the calendar before yours fills up completely . . .

    Great memories!! Wish I had some nettle tea and a Scrabble game tonight!!!

    • Hi Glendie. We have plenty of nettle here! And I’ll play Scrabble any time, you know… Just let me know!
      Thanks for the weekend and all your help in our nettle outing. They are drying and being stored every day a little at a time. For when you come next. Still (dried) nettle tea!
